The Cataclysm

The Cataclysm was the eruption of raw magical power brought about by the clash of arcane and divine energies as a result of the Mystic War. Accounts about the nature of the event itself vary wildly, ranging from an explosion more intense than a thousand suns to the manifestation of the True Light in corporeal form, unleashing its wrath upon the insolent mortals caught in the fray. Only a scarce few beings of extreme power witnessed the Cataclysm and lived, and of those only a fraction can be convinced to speak of it.

The fallout of the Cataclysm, however, is well documented. The sight of the event itself was devastated, leaving only the accursed wasteland known as the Scarred Hills. The majority of Aetheron’s mages and clerics were lost in the blast, or from the arcane shockwave that swept across the continent. Those who survived lost their power; sorcerer bloodlines became dormant, druids were forsaken by the forces of nature, and the patrons of witches suddenly went silent. The most memorable consequence, however, was the loss of the Faith of the True Light. None of the local lumens retained their ability to heal, and true clerics disappeared from the continent entirely. For almost a century Aetheron was bereft of magic, until lumen adepts, druids, and sorcerers began to reemerge (the length of time witches were deprived of power is unknown), though clerics would remain unseen until the Third Descent.

The Cataclysm heralded the end of the Third Age, and the decades of strife that followed the continental loss of magic led world leaders to declare the new era the Mortal Age.
